The weekends games between HBU and MIDDLESBROUGH along with the MANCHESTER GRIMSBY GAME brought the premier league to its close, the games between all these sides had been close all season. Whilst HBU were on there way to become champions before there final match was played, places 2 to 4 were still in the balance thanks to a remarkable game last week when Middlesboro hosted a weakened team from Bury. Bury’s performance turned the form book on its head, getting off to a brilliant start Bury took a 2 goal lead and it stayed that way for most of the first half with Bury putting up an excellent defensive if somewhat physical defensive display with the occasional counter attack, with a rejuvenated WILLIS playing like a twenty year old looking like he was going to score everytime he got the ball.
Middleboro’s pressure eventually brought its reward with a goal.
Half time. 2-1
The start of the second was just like the first with Bury amazingly getting two more quick goals 4 – 1 GAME OVER, Middlesboro threw everything they could at Bury giving no thought to defense, every Bury counter attack seemed to end with WILLIS putting the ball in the back of the net then standing like some resplendent Cantona taking the grudging applause from the Middlesboro faithful, 4-1 quickly became 9-1 the game petered out with Bury getting 2 more goals and the Middlesboro team getting some reward for their efforts with 4 more goals. Yet the final score 11-5 doesn’t truly reflect Bury’s tactical domination of the Middlesboro side.
Willis for England on this performance.
The result meant for the first time in years we had three teams fighting it out for second place.
