England v Spain
England, as in French game, began the mornings match with restricted man-to-man play intending to hit on the break. At half time the score was a very creditable 2 – 0 (to Spain).
England, through Martin Walker, scored 5 minutes into the 2nd half to bring the score to 2 -1. The Spanish were now rattled and they called a time-out and changed the whole team! Still there was no change in the scoreline. With 7 minutes remaining on the clock they came back with heavy pressure and with Ashley Pay the ‘keeper going off injured and the rest of the team tired, they put 10 goals in.
The final score was a disappointing 12 to England’s 1 considering how the team had played.
Robert Carnell will have to sit out tonight’s match against Portugal having picked up a red card in the Spanish game.
England v Portugal
The halftime score was 6 – 0 to Portugal and the final score was 12 – 0.
Coach,Phil McVey’s comment after the match was that the whole England team put in an outstanding performance and he was proud of them. Playing 2 such matches in one day and the 2nd with a man short the players did everything and more that was asked of them.
The Round Robin format is much preferred but as goal difference can be a major influence in the final placings both Spain and Portugal had a mission to accomplish to safeguard their standings.
