England 3 USA 5
England looked on form to win this one
comfortably but the start team gave the
appearance of thinking it was another day off.
The lethargic start let USA flick 2 balls into the
net and establish a 2 goal lead in the first half
(both scored by USA No. 3 Mathias).
Dan Barton took over the goal minding in the
2nd half and Brendan Barker reduced the
deficit to 1 within 2 minutes of the restart only
for Mathias to do it again 30 seconds later.
USA’s Comican added another and Barker
replied this time in 6 seconds.
Chasing the game, England had to keep up
the pressure which allowed USA to go to 5-2.
Andy Ashurst made it 5 -3 with 10 minutes to
go but USA kept the match tangled up until the
end leaving USA safe and England facing
Mozambique and probably Holland to stay up.
England 4 Mozambique 2
Another unconvincing start by an England
team out of practice at playing against box
defence. Moreover, Mozambique had the pace
to close down England’s attempts at dribbling
and hit hard and fast on the break.
Mozambique scored first after 14 minutes. It
took England til the 18th to level it only to see
Mozambique score with zero seconds
remaining of the half.
In the 2nd half England created problems in
the Mozambique box and they changed to
man-to-man. James Taylor levelled the score
in the 12th minute and Simon Hosking
poached one to provide the lead. Darrel
Pearce rounded it off with 4 minutes to go by
finishing off a pass from James after he had
had to jump over a Mozambique player trying
to take him out.
