Court orders new vote on recognition on Catalonia in 9 months

July 15th, 2005 · No Comments

The Court of Arbitration of Sport ordered today that the
Assembly of the Federation of International Roller Sports (FIRS)
again vote to decide the if the Catalan Federation would be
recognized as a nation member.

The Assembly of the FIRS first rejected the admission of
Catalonia on 26 November 2004, despite the Executive
Committee’s giving their provisional acceptance in March 2004,
in a vote made by raise of hands that registered 114 votes
against, 8 in favor and 2 abstentions.

The court held that the Catalan Federation, must be allowed to
speak and defend itself at the next Assembly of the FIRS and
that a secret ballot must be held.

Further, the court considers that the FIRS, “violated his own
statutes” when taking a vote by raise of hands instead of a
secret ballot, despite a specific request by two of its members.
