Before the weekend The Lennards Trophy Tournament had already been depleted by 2 withdrawals and the competition was then further reduced on Saturday when the Southsea & Farnham matches became ‘friendlies’ because they were using guest players which were not permitted by the Rules. This only left Bury, Middlesbrough and HBU as the official competitors with only Bury & Middlesbrough with complete teams.
The 5 matches on this 1st day were all played very competitively and in good spirit by all the teams.
Sunday morning saw Herne Bay Utd also using a guest player who proved very necessary when one of their (4) players was injured just minutes into their first match of the day. This left just 2 teams competing for the Trophy and they had played each other the previous evening!
This HBU guest player was Stuart Doherty who really deserved a special award for the person making the most appearances - playing in 4 of the 5 matches on Sunday!
As on the Saturday all of Sunday’s games were strongly played and all the teams were sporting in their play.
Presentations were made by Eddie Spencer of the Southsea RHC.
