Quite an eventful Sunday at Herne Bay in more ways than one. Travellers from the west came with stories of Arctic conditions, white outs and closed roads over high passes. In spite of this, all teams managed to arrive in good time.
It was cold outside, and inside the Pier it wasn’t much warmer temperature-wise. But the arrival of visiting teams coincided with a fast tempo game between local rivals Herne Bay and Herne Bay Utd. HBU took a 2-0 lead into the break, a gap which Herne Bay were not able to close in the second half. HBU came away 3-1 winners.
Those travellers from the west, Plymouth and Farnham, met in the second game. One goal a piece at half time, Farnham managed to step up a gear, play a more cohesive game in the second half, and finish 8-1 winners.
After a short break, Farnham then faced Herne Bay, holding them for the first half to go in with a 3 goal deficit. The second half was dominated by Herne Bay, scoring a further 9 goals, with a consolation penalty goal for Farnham.
The remaining games were dominated by the clubs from Herne Bay. At the end of the tournament, with one to go, HBU top the league, 3 points clear of their local rivals. With a gap now until May, hopefully the Kent weather will have improved a little.
