England took possession of the match from the start with the Austrian goalkeeper playing out of his skin behind a resolute defence.
After 7 minutes Mark Waddingham had the chance to use a penalty to break the deadlock but he failed in his attempt to dribble the keeper.
It was not until late in the 2nd half that Simon Hosking put the ball in the net to make it 1 – 0 at half time.
The 2nd half was much the same with England having nearly all the play and shooting on target but goals would not come. Finally Neil Austin took it to 2 – 0. Brendan Barker took a penalty shot that the Austrian goalie decided to head out – leaving a shaking head and a dented face-guard.
Ben Wells kept it 2 – 0 by dramatically saving an Austrian penalty but shortly afterwards a ball that looked completely harmless bobbled in. Brendan Barker restored England’s 2 goal lead virtually instantaneously by sweeping home a pass from James Taylor and that marked the end of a good period for Austria.
In the final phase of the match, Austria’s energy was drained and they were left as spectators as England concentrated on the passing game that resulted in a goal from James Taylor with 13 seconds left on the clock. Final score 4 – 1.
