Middlesbrough secured their first away win of the season with a spirited and disciplined display at Manchester. Middlesbrough who were without 5 squad players fielded an experienced team which saw Alan Johnson make his debut.

From the very beginning Manchester kept a lot of possession but were unable to break through the strong Middlesbrough Diamond. Boro sat back for long periods, allowing Manchester to take long range efforts only and took advantage on the break to lead 3-0 at half time through John Jones and Mark Waddingham (2).

The second half was very similar to the first and goals were exhanged although Manchester ever got within 2 goals of Middlesbrough. John Jones (2) and Mark Waddingham (2) completed the scoring for Middlesbrough with Mark Innis, Mark Colton and Drew Sims scoring for Manchester to leave the final score 7-3 to Middlesbrough.

Team Captain John Jones said “We knew he had to come here and win as we were disappointed to lose at home 2 weeks ago against Manchester. The defending was fantastic and when Manchester did get an opportunity, Ian Smith was at hand and played brilliantly for us”
