Close one with Colombia

October 4th, 2003 · No Comments

Around 100 spectators turn up for the 8.30am match.
James Taylor is out of the game with a 1 match
suspension for 3 blue cards.
England start off well playing man to man with Dan
Barton, Jess I’Anson, Shaun Pearce, Matt Oaten & Mark
Waddingham.

After 2 minutes Matt Oaten scores his 1st of the
campaign with a strong slapshot through the middle.
1 minute later and the Colombians reply 1 – 1.
Another minute passes & Mark Waddingham gets in on
the act with a flick shot to put England 2 – 1 up after just
4 minutes.
5 minutes in & Waddingham’s on fire as he scores his
2nd & England are 3 – 1 up!
The team are playing a great game of hockey.
With 5 minutes of the half remaining Austin goes down
for a penalty, but the German referee gives a free hit
outside the area yet another poor decision!
Austin & the Colombian no 7 are given straight blue
cards by the Argentinian referee.
HALF TIME ENGLAND 3 – 1 COLOMBIA.
2nd half starts as the 1st in just 59 seconds Jess
I’Anson makes it 4 – 1 with his 1st goal. England are
cruising now & the Colombians heads are down! But
not for long.
6 minutes into the half and a miss hit shot rolls under
Keeper Bartons legs to put the Colombians heads up 4
- 2.
9 minutes to go & a penalty awarded to Colombia is
well saved by Barton.
8 minutes remaining & the Colombian no 2 scores
again 4 – 3.
7 minutes left and the Colombian no 2 shoots & their no
7 scores the rebound to draw the game.
FULL TIME ENGLAND 4 – 4 COLOMBIA.
Fitness will now tell in the 10 minutes of extra time!
2 minutes of the 1st half gone & no 7 for Colombia
scores 4 – 5. The 1st period of extra time end 4 – 5.
Only 1 minute to go in the 2nd period now & both no 7’s
are given yellows resulting in Austin going off with an
unjustified accumulative red card. He will miss the next
opening match!
The lads are very tired after 2 games going into extra
time & with just 28 seconds remaining on the clock
the Colombian no 5 finishes us off to end the match 4
goals to 6 Colombia.
England came into the World ‘A’ group in 16th position
and ended it in 16th position, but with a lot of positives
& good experience for further International campaigns.
Between the 21st & 25th of this month I will be sending
updates from the European junior Championships,
Vale de Cambra, Portugal, (just 11 kilometers up the
road).
