England Vs. Switzerland

September 30th, 2003 · No Comments

Good crowd in for a Sunday morning of around 1000
spectators and very hot.
Starting line up Dan Barton Captain, Joe Wheatley,
Daryl Pearce, Neil Austin & James Taylor.
Coach Amaral starts with a box, diamond defense,
which is working well as we break on the counter attack
and Neil Austin of Herne Bay United scores the
opening goal with a long shot through a crowded
defense area after 7.00 minutes of the match.

12.48 gone and Amaral calls a time out and tells the
team to settle as we have the lead, not for long! 2
minutes later the Swiss score with a long on the floor
which should have been cut out 1 - 1.
9.00 to go and the Swiss get their 2nd through a well
worked free hit from close in. 1 - 2.
7.32 remaining of the half and the 1st sub is made,
Shaun Pearce goes on for Wheatley.
Matt Oaten comes on for a tiring Austin and gets a good
shot in which the Swiss keeper does well to save!
2 yellow cards go to the Swiss, who are playing a very
physical game, they need to win to go through to the
top 8 group.
41 seconds to go and England are awarded a penalty
which Taylor takes and tries to lift the ball over the
keeper, who saves it !! See photo on official web-site.
4 seconds and S Pearce is given a direct blue for
hooking. Dan Barton makes a great save from the direct
hit.
Half time score ENGLAND 1 - 2 SWITZERLAND.
2nd half went the same as the 1st with the Swiss
gaining in confidence and putting the pressure on our
lads.
England struggled for opportunities to score and tired in
the heat of the Pavilion!
Ian Smith goal keeper came on for Dan in the last
minutes and made a great save, and then stopped a
fierce penalty shot.
Lots of cards for the Swiss and a further 3 goals ended
the score at ENGLAND 1 - SWITZERLAND 5.
A learning curve at the ‘A’s. The Swiss team are not a
great deal better than us, but tactically they had the
upper hand and also the experience of playing every 2
years in this competition.
Playing Mozambique will be very tough as last night
they led and then held Spain the World Champions to a
2 - 2 draw until the last 2 minutes when Panadero
scored for the Spanish to win 3 - 2.
