Maidstone, currently lying in 3rd place in the Premier League gave a big wake up call to Letchworth, who only 48hrs earlier, were league leaders – since the first day of the season.
“Not bad, seeing as we were missing Clive, Julian, Paul and Grant!” said Joe Wheatley happily.
Was this down to tactical errors by the Easterners? Were their England Stars jaded after a hard fought England Competition in Switzerland? A win against Maidstone would have kept them firmly in the driving seat to take the Championship from HBU’s grasp, if HBU slipped up just once.
Maidstone, without 4 key players went 1 nil down after 8 minutes to a goal by Matt Oaten.
Joe Wheatley – recently returned from the England Senior trip to Switzerland, alongside a strong Letchworth contingent – then went on to level, with Southsea & England Veteran Stuart Doherty scoring 2 minutes from the half time whistle, giving Maidstone the lead to take into the break.
In the second half, the ‘Joe Wheatley Show’ then got truly underway, with another 3 goals for the England Star, plus 1 for hardworking Tommy Harboard.
Despite a late fightback by Letchworth with goals from S.Pearce and another from Matt Oaten, Maidstone took all three points on the day.
