HBU Closing on Letchworth

March 24th, 2003 · No Comments

HBU closed to within 3 points of League leaders Letchworth, with a fine win at The Priory on Saturday evening, beating the home side Letchworth, 8-3. “It was a good game” said Aileen Barker, “and the team were spurred on by the write up on PRH!” HBU were then trailing 3-0 to Maidstone on Sunday, until with the true strength of character we have come to expect from the Champions, came fighting back to lead 4-3 with minutes to go, before Joe Wheatley, having played the majority of the game and just returned on the overnight coach from a ski-ing trip, levelled the match from the penalty spot, 4-4. “I’m knackered!” was all Joe was quoted to say when asked how he felt about the match. Elsewhere in the PL, Middlesbrough beat an understrength Manchester side at the Rainbow, 17-5. CaptainDerrick Smith said on behalf of the Boro’ “we can only play the team they put out. I was frankly surprised by the tactics they played, with such an inexperienced team.” Neville Black, the only International ‘A’ grade Referee on the NRHA’s books who was a spectator at the match, said it was a good game, but he would not have been as lenient as the Refs were with the abuse and fouls from some of the players!

Sheffield were beaten 12 goals to 7 by Grimsby @ The Metrodome on Sunday 23rd March. For updated league results and league table, see ‘competitions’ above.
