World Schoolboys At Risk

October 9th, 2002 · No Comments

PRH has been advised that the Portuguese Federation are intensively lobbying national delegates at the CIRH meetings being held concurrently with the 5th Ladies World Championship, in Paços de Ferreira, Portugal, to agree to replace the successful World Schoolboys Championship with a Junior World Championship.

Portugal, who opposed the creation of the International Competition for Schoolboys four years ago, has failed to send teams to the last two events, but despite this the Championship held last February in Chile was a huge success for the sport attracting teams from 10 nations and saw England cause an upset to earn forth place in the event.

“It is critically important that the International governing body of our sport stand up to the Portuguese Federation and guarantee that World Schoolboys Championships are conducted as a priority.” Said Kos Galtos, England Schoolboys Coach and NRHA Marketing Director, “ The event represents a great opportunity to motivate young players from smaller Roller Hockey nations, and help to ensure the sport has a future outside of Spain and Portugal.”

“The skills gap in players from different countries is more pronounced the older they get and by allowing Schoolboys to compete in World Championships we ensure a closer competition that adds to the motivation of our players.”

“Since returning from Chile the enthusiasm of the players is evident and they have a new willingness to work harder and stay in the sport. This must surely be the objective of the International body!”

European President and candidate for CIRH President, Carlos Sena has been supportive of Portuguese attempts to end the World Schoolboys Championship and PRH asks you the reader to email him directly, on the link below, to demonstrate the support that the competition has outside of the dominant Latin nations.
