England 3 – Germany 2

July 13th, 2002 · No Comments

In a demonstration of character and commitment the young England side, that has done so well at this European Championship, beat long time nemesis Germany in what has been reported as the “best England performance in decades”.

Andrew Ashurst scored, at 1.30 minutes, a great goal from his first attempt in the match and then the English patiently droped into the Diamond that was complimented earlier in the tournament by the Spanish coach.

To the crowds surprise the Germans hit back with a goal in the 7th minute and then again 30 seconds later to go 2-1 up, but the English did not drop their heads for a moment.

The Germans, notorious for their physical style of play, pressed their advantage but in the twelth minute Joe Wheatly made a great pass across the goal to James Taylor who smashed the ball into the net to tie the match 2 – 2, with 55% of the possession in a very competitive game.

Three minutes into the second half Joe Wheatley, the ever reliable England player, passed anothher brilliant ball across the goal to captain Andrew Ashurst who slotted it in to put England up 3 – 2!

True to form the Germans presses hard to get the goal they need, keeping 60% possession in the dieing stages of the match against a very tired England, and began to look stronger when five minutes from the end of the match they were awarded a dream penalty by the unsighted referee.

With England’s fans hearts in mouths, and Coach Carlos Amaral expressing exactly how he felt,Ian Morrison once again made a beautiful save that gave the team the spirit to push the Germans back for the remainder of the match.

Just 2 minutes from the end, James Taylor was given a second yellow card and suspended for the remainder of the match, after he was blatantly hacked by a German player, and was subbed by Shaun Pierce to ensure an England win 3-2.

Congratulations guys! What a win
