NRHA Competitions Director, Tony Czifra, recently announced that the 2002 Peter
Wimble Veterans Trophy will be contested on the 6th & 7th July 2002 at Southsea RHC.
Eddie Spencer, the tournament organiser and President of the Southsea RHC, said “The outdoor rink has seen a lot of refurbishment recently with the surface having been ‘ground’ to take away the bumps and tile edges, and a new grandstand and changing rooms have been built. The Club is really back to it’s best! We look forward to serving a variety of refreshments to the players and supporters through the weekend in our Club House….”
This years event shall see ten (10) teams including Southsea RHC, who have entered a ‘new’ Veterans team that strongly resembles the enormously successful Dex-o-tex side from the 1980’s, and rules are being considered to encourage even more teams to contest the event by banning any body contact whatsoever with players over the age of sixty. ” Vets over the age of sixty will wear GOLD Shorts and referees will award a free hit if an opposition player touches them” said Paul Colton, of Manchester RHC, the instigator of the change.
Despite the success in numbers a little controversy has surround this years tournament due to a fixture clash with the Eastern Regions Cup Finals Day which has meant that some Veterans from the Region will not be in attendance this year, though the NRHA ensure “This kind of clash will NOT happen again. From now on, as agreed by the NRHA and Regional Presidents, all Competitions Executives will work together to devise the National & Regional Calendars in advance so they compliment and not clash with each other”.
Matches start at 3pm on Saturday 6th of July.
